About Us

The Exchange is a company committed to creating the classics of the future, from every source and method. Productions range from reinterpretations of classic texts to new commissions, constantly exploring and pushing how new theatre is made to suit our contemporary times. Through its development center, the Orchard Project, the Exchange serves a unique function in American theatre as the only theatre company in the country to support the work of other innovative companies and artists. Through the Orchard Project and other development initiatives, the Exchange redefines the way new theatre is made in the United States. Key to this push is seeking interactive ways to engage both audiences and artists in dynamic exchange of ideas and artistic vision. To that end, The Exchange hopes to embody its name in its actions.
The Exchange is committed to producing work by underrepresented popular storytellers and aims to make performance a meeting place for our time, inviting new storytellers to the theatre and producing work for audiences who have little access to theatre. The Exchange acts as a launching pad for bold work, powerful voices, dramatic skill, strong characterization, ambition, immediacy, resonance, cultural and political awareness. We provide an opportunity for our collaborators to think beyond the norm, redefining the rules of for creating work, whether new or classic, and making theatre that is a true intersection of other disciplines and media.

Beyond producing work, The Exchange looks to support the best voices in the theatrical form with bold initiatives, such as the Kesselring Fellowship – a prestigious playwright’s grant, and the Catskill residency program The Orchard Project. Our multi-arts partnerships with organizations like the Catskill Mountain Foundation, the National Arts Club and others help to create a new and broad community of theatre makers, providing a home for the public exploration of ideas and cultivation of new audiences.
